Explosions reported at two Iraqi bases, including camp hosting US soldiers

Rockets targeted an Iraqi base hosting US soldiers on Monday night while explosions rocked another military camp used by pro-Iran militias, the latest attacks on compounds housing international forces.

There were no reports of injuries from the four Katyusha missiles that hit Al-Taji, although an Iraqi military plane was damaged.

"Initial information indicates that the missile attack left only physical damages," Capt. Ahmed Khalaf from the Iraqi police told Anadolu Agency.

Two explosions were also reported at the Speicher camp in Salahaddin province, which hosts fighters from the Iraqi government-affiliated Popular Mobilisation Forces, a militia coalition with close ties to Iran.

It is not clear who carried out the attack but there were no reports of injuries, according to Rudaw.

"Civil defence teams were able to control the fire caused by these two explosions," the Iraqi Security Media Cell reported in a statement.

Al-Taji is an Iraq military base also used by a US-led international coalition fighting the Islamic State group.

It is located some 85 kilometres from the capital Baghdad and has been the frequent target of rocket attacks, with pro-Iran militias thought to be responsible.

In March, two American and one British soldiers were killed in a rocket attack on the base.

Scores were injured when Iran fired missiles at a number of Iraqi bases hosting American soldiers in January, in retaliation for the killing of commander Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike.

Although it is not clear who launched the attacks on the bases, it comes as the Iraqi military embarks on a new operation against the remnants of IS in the north of the country.

Speicher, a former US military base, was the site of a massacre of Iraqi soldiers by IS fighters in 2014.
