IS publishes 'rules of female slavery'
The Islamic State group has published a pamphlet that tries to justify its subjugation of non-Muslim women and girls in sexual bondage, Human Rights Watch has reported.
The armed group has subjected women and girls to a system of organised rape and sexual assault, sexual slavery and forced marriage, according to Yazidi women and girls interviewed by HRW who have escaped IS captivity.
HRW has now published IS' list of rules for having sex with women and girls who are not Muslim.
The list is considered authentic according to the human rights group, and was published on a pro-IS Twitter account.
"What is striking is that, in the minds of its authors, this is not a lawless document. It sets forth an interpretation of sharia, or Islamic law, albeit an extreme one. Far from pure licentiousness, it is filled with legal constraints," said Kenneth Roth, executive director of HRW.

"By treating captured non-Muslim women as subject to the sexual whims of those who control them, IS disregards nearly universal injunctions against slavery and rape."
He said the group's use of Sharia to justify its actions highlights how important it has become for those qualified to speak about Islamic law, and those able to enforce international human rights law, to counter this "legal" claim.
