A woman was killed in the village of Qallin in Egypt's Kafr el-Sheikh governorate after exorcists beat her to death in order to treat her from demonic possession, reported local media.
According to police reports, the 25-year-old woman was suffering from a neurological condition, while people explained as a demonic possession, advising her to seek the help of exorcists in Qallin.
The woman went with some of her family members, who watched as one of the exorcists beat her severely, claiming she was possessed by demons.
When the woman's family realised she had died due to severe beating, they filed a police report, and the case has been referred to the prosecution.
There have been similar cases of death during exorcism attempts in Egypt, where exorcism is a common practice, especially in rural areas.
A recent study by the Egyptian Centre for Social and Criminal Research said that an estimated 300,000 people in Egypt claim the ability to treat patients through exorcism, with an equal number of others who also claim the ability to treat patients through reciting the Quran and the Bible.
