The prospect of a Trump win brought the Canadian immigration down [The New Arab]
For many Americans, the prospect of a Donald Trump election win made the idea of running of to Canada something of a running joke.

That joke turned to a real sense of anxiety when Trump defied the polls and went into the lead on election night.

It soon became apparent that liberal Americans were thinking seriously about a move to their northern neighbour.

The Canadian immigration website went blank reading the message "500 - internal server error" on Tuesday night.

It indicated that a huge number of people had tried to access the website, causing it to crash.

Canada was a place of refuge for Americans fleeing forced conscription during the Vietnam War.

For many liberal Americans, women, Muslims and minorities, they might be viewing Canada as a haven again following the terrifying possibilities of what could happen under a President Trump.

The Republican presidenial candidate has promised to ban Muslims from entering the US, and has been dogged with racist and sexist remarks during the election campaign.

Some liberals found humour in their grief by turning Trump's idea of walling off the Mexican border to stop immigration on its head.

But others will be thinking seriously about opportunities elsewhere.
