Telecom companies in Qatar have changed their network names to "Tamim al-Majd" [Glorious Tamim] in support for the country's Emir amid an ongoing Gulf crisis.

Ooredo, the country's largest telecom provider made the announcement on Twitter late on Thursday evening.

"Dear customer, Ooredoos' network name has been changed to 'Tamim Almajd'," it said in a tweet.

"Qatar will always be free, elevated by the spirits of the loyal."

Rival Vodafone, a British multinational company, the Qatar subsidiary of which is 70 percent Qatari-owned, initially offered users the option of coming into its stores to change their phones' network names to support the Emir.

However, the company later applied the change across its network.

Since then, social media users have been uploading screenshots of their phones to show the changes in their network names, mostly praising the move.

A month of sanctions imposed on Qatar by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirate, Bahrain, and Egypt that have cut ties with Doha has spurred patriotic feelings among Qataris.

Many locals, including expatriates, have been flocking to a giant billboard in the Qatari capital with a portrait of the Emir to sign it and take pictures of it.

The image, created by Qatari artist Ahmed bin Majed al-Maadheed, can be seen all over Qatar - online and offline – as people have put it on t-shirts, cars, and on social media platforms including twitter, facebook, instagram and snapchat.
