On May 25, George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man, was killed after a white police officer knelt on his neck despite Floyd repeatedly saying 'I can't breathe'.

The killing was caught on video, and within hours of it being posted online, massive protests against racism and police brutality took to the streets in his home city of Minneapolis, USA.

Only the latest in a long chain of similar killings of unarmed black men by police or white civilians, Floyd's death has since triggered a nationwide American wave of anti-racism protests that have spread to many cities around the world with systematic problems of racism against black people.

The unifying cry of all these protests has been the same: Black Lives Matter.

For a while, Black Lives Matter has been the name of a broad coalition of anti-racism groups in the United States and beyond, and despite many waves of protests in the past coalescing around its slogans, this time many believe the anti-racism protests are different in history-changing ways.

With populist, rightwing, or even outright White supremacist leaders in power in many Western capitals, the anti-racism uprising is determined not only to stop attempts to roll back racial justice gains painstakingly won since the Civil Rights Movement era, but also to secure more justice and bring about a reckoning for the West's history of racist conquest and the slave trade, targeting monuments celebrating that blood-soaked past in North America and Western Europe.

The New Arab provides special, in-depth coverage of this important story, giving space to authentic voices from the heart of the anti-racism movement and highlighting parallels and intersections with the struggle for social justice and equality elsewhere in the world.
