Jordan will be the embarkation point for 25,000 Syrian refugees flying to Canada, where they will be welcomed from next month, Canada's ambassador to Jordan confirmed.

The 25,000 Syrian refugees expected to arrive in Canada from next month will be journeying via the desert kingdom of Jordan.

Each day from December 1, Canada will fly 900 Syrian refugees from Jordan to Montreal and Toronto, Canadian media reported last week, citing a leaked document.

From there they will be transported to two military bases in Ontario and Quebec, where they would be temporarily housed, the reports said, giving a total cost of CA$1.2 billion ($900 million) for the operation over six years.

Ambassador Bruno Saccomani said refugees currently in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey would be flown to Canada from Jordan, citing the kingdom's "security and stability", the official Petra news agency reported.

Further details of the operation are to be announced on Tuesday.

The United Nations refugee agency estimates that more than four million Syrians have fled the civil war that has ravaged their country and reportedly killed more than 250,000 people.
