Israeli forces shot dead two Palestinians on Wednesday after a stabbing attack left three Israelis injured at Jerusalem's Old City Jaffa Gate.

The two Palestinians have been identified as Anan Mohamed Abou Habssa and Issa Yassin Assaf, both in their twenties, Qalandia Media Centre told The New Arab.

The attack comes as Israeli settlers stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Wednesday morning, with little intervention from Israeli forces who were also present on the site.

A wave of violence has dominated the region since the start of October, claiming the lives of 124 Palestinians, 17 Israelis, an American and an Eritrean.

Israeli police also carried out a number of arrests in different parts of Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Four Palestinians from Hebron were arrested at the Abu Rish checkpoint in the southern region of the city for allegedly possessing a knife.

Seven other Palestinians from Bethlehem and Beit Fajar, south of the city, and a young man from the town of Abu Dis, east of Jerusalem were also detained.
