Egyptian authorities have blocked access to The New Arab and al-Araby al-Jadeed in Egypt just days after Saudi Arabia and the UAE took the same steps.
In yet another curtailment to press freedom and the freedom of expression in Egypt, readers of The New Arab were met with blank screens as they tried to enter the website from anywhere inside the country.

This blocking comes as part of the Egyptian regime's clampdown on media outlets that offer coverage and perspectives different from that of pro-state propaganda.

Since its launch over a year ago, The New Arab has been subject to many attacks by the Egyptian media, the most high-profile attack coming from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi himself.

It appears that this step came as part of a coordinated move against The New Arab.

Over a week ago, The New Arab and its Arabic sister site, al-Araby al-Jadeed were both blocked in Saudi Arabia, only to be followed by authorities in The United Arab Emirates.

No reasons were given for the blocking in either case.

In support of The New Arab and al-Araby al-Jadeed, readers have started a hashtag campaign on Twitter. Join the conversation here #حجب_العربي_الجديد
