Egyptian authorities will open the Rafah crossing with Gaza in both directions on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday next week, said Maher Abu Sabha, director of Gaza's border crossings, on Wednesday.

The crossing has been closed for at least two months.

The Palestinian embassy in Cairo said the announcement came after an intervention by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, to "ease the suffering of Palestinian people".

People with visas, residence permits or humanitarian cases will be able to cross the border - Gaza's only connection to the outside world - in the days ahead of Ramadan.
