Three injured in Paris-bound gunman attack

Three people were wounded including two seriously when a gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon on a high-speed train travelling from Amsterdam to Paris Friday, officials said.

Passengers on the train, who were reportedly American Marines, overpowered the attacker.

The suspect was arrested after the train stopped in Arras, 115 miles (185 kilometers north of Paris, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henri Brandet said on French television BFM. Passengers were evacuated and police have secured the area.

Two of the victims are in critical condition, according to a statement from the office of President Francois Hollande.

The identity of the gunman and the motivation for the attack is unknown, Brandet said, however French anti-terror investigators have launched a probe into the attack.

Christophe Piednoel, a spokesman for national railway operator SNCF, said the suspect was armed with an automatic rifle and a knife.

France's interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve was en route to Arras.
