More than 20 people were killed and dozens more injured after a car bomb exploded near a busy market in the Waberi area of the Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday morning.

The car bomb targeted a police station in the area and is believed to be connected to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's visit to a local university.

"The whole market is ruined and people perished. The death toll is sure to rise," Abdikadir Farah, a police officer, told Reuters.

Police commander Bashir Abshir later told journalists that the driver of the car bomb had been arrested in connection with the attack.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, however the attack is almost identical to a number of attacks by the extremist terrorist group, al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab have increased their violence against the state in recent months, in an attempt to disrupt local elections.

Around 13,000 people are currently voting for a total of 275 MP positions who will ultimately vote for a new president.
