A young Palestinian man was left dead and another badly injured, after Israeli police opened fire on their car in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.

Palestinian health ministry officials identified the man who was killed as 22-year-old Anwar al-Salaymeh. The other passenger who remains critically injured was identified as 20-year-old Fares Khader al-Rishq.

A third Palestinian in the vehicle - identified as 20-year-old Mohamed Nassar - was detained by Israeli forces after the incident.

Israeli security forces had been carrying out a search operation in the town of al-Ram, northeast of Jerusalem, during which they uncovered an arms workshop, and Israeli spokesperson said.

Witnesses said that Rishq's vehicle arrived near the area where the raid was taking place, and Israeli soldiers opened fire on the men in the car at close distance.

The three youths were seemingly unaware that Israeli forces were deployed in the town and conducting raids, witnesses told Maan News.

One of the border policemen said he "felt in danger" and opened fire, an Israeli army spokesperson said, when the man said he thought the car was aiming at him.

Locals added that clashes erupted between youths angered by the killing and Israeli forces. Soldiers opened fire with live rounds, rubber-coated steel bullets, stun grenades and tear-gas bombs they said.

An unidentified youth was also reportedly detained during clashes.

A wave of violence has hit the occupied Palestinian territories since October last year. At least 215 Palestinians, 34 Israelis, two Americans, an Eritrean and a Sudanese have been killed.
