Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian man for allegedly stabbing one of their officers in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, the army said.

The forces had been chasing a group of alleged rock throwers in a car, the army statement said.

"One of the assailants exited the vehicle and stabbed a soldier," it said, "Responding, the soldier fired towards the perpetrator, resulting in his death."

The Israeli officer was taken to hospital for treatment, the statement added, without giving any details on his injuries.

The incident took place close to the Jewish settlement of Ariel, illegal under international law, near the Palestinian city of Nablus in the northern West Bank.

The Palestinian Minsitry of Health confirmed the Palestinian was killed at the scene, Ma'an news reported.

He was identified as Sari Muhammad Abu Ghurab, 24, from the village of Qabatiya in the northern West Bank district of Jenin, the news agency added.

A wave of violence that started in October has killed 220 Palestinians, 34 Israelis, two Americans, an Eritrean and a Sudanese.
