Islamic State group militants have shot down an Iraqi helicopter supporting elite forces in Mosul, the military has reported.

Two crew members were killed in the attack, the military said on Thursday, which comes as Iraqi forces continue their offensive of IS-held neighbourhoods in Mosul.

"Their helicopter aircraft was attacked by enemy fire and destroyed on the battlefield," Iraq's Joint Operations Command said in a statement, putting the death toll at two.

A video was released showing the chopper in flames as it crashed to the ground.

The military did not say whether it was a missile or gunfire that led to the crash, but it follows a desperate fight back by IS as it loses ground in Syria and Iraq.

Another helicopter crashed in Iraq earlier this year due to a "technical fault" killing four crew members.
