US President Donald Trump is expected to extend sanctions relief to Iran this week as part of the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

The nuclear deal agreed to exempt Iran from sanctions related to its nuclear program but the Trump administration has pursued aggressive sanctions unrelated to it.

Trump is likely to pair his decision by imposing new targeted sanctions on Iranian businesses and individuals, some of which could affect firms whose sanctions were scrapped under the 2015 agreement, sources told AP.

The Trump administration must decide by Friday whether to extend the sanctions waiver on Iran, the US State Department said on Tuesday.

Trump has been railing against the Iran deal since before he was elected in November last year, calling it "one of the worst" in US history, and warned America could leave it "at any time".

In October, Trump unveiled an aggressive new strategy towards Iran when he announced he would not re-certify the landmark 2015 nuclear accord.

Signed by Iran, Germany, and UN Security Council permanent members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, the JCPOA curbed Iran's nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.

Since coming to office, Trump has worked to dismantle the legacy of his predecessor Barack Obama on issues ranging from climate change to free trade, often leaving Washington isolated on the world stage.
