A Palestinian teenager died on Wednesday after being struck in the head by a tear gas cannister that Israeli forces fired at protesters close to the Gaza border, the health ministry in the enclave said.

Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP that Ahmed Abu Habel, 15, succumbed to a head wound near a checkpoint between Israel and the Gaza Strip.

Israel's military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Wednesday's incident took place in the Beit Hanoun area of the northern Gaza Strip, near the Erez crossing into Israel.

Palestinians have staged regular protests along the Gaza separation fence since 30 March, demanding the right for families to return home after they fled or were expelled from during the creation of Israel in 1948.

They are also calling for an end to the decade-long Israel-Egypt blockade that the UN says will make Gaza "unlivable" by 2020.

At least 195 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since March, the majority during border protests. One Israeli soldier has been shot dead by a Palestinian sniper in that period.

Israel accuses Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the Gaza Strip, of orchestrating protests.

Palestinians and human rights groups say protesters have been shot while posing no real threat.
