Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday said he was awaiting the results of an investigation into the disappearance of a Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi  who sources previously said had been killed after entering Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul.

"I am following the [issue] and we will inform the world of the outcome" of the official probe, Erdogan said following the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi on Tuesday.

One of Erdogan's advisers pitched in on Sunday saying he too believes Kashoggi has been killed by Saudi authorities following his disappearance.

Yasin Aktay, who advises Erdogan in his ruling AK Party, told Reuters that Turkish authorities believe a group of 15 Saudi nationals were “most certainly involved” in the murder.

He also deplored Saudi authorities for their "insincere" statements and the absence of cameras during the incident.

On Saturday, Turkish officials told multiple international news agencies that the prominent Saudi journalist and critic was murdered.

"Based on their initial findings, the police believe that the journalist was killed by a team especially sent to Istanbul and who left the same day," an official told AFP.

Turkish officials made similar statements to Reuters and The Associated Press.

A senior Turkish police source told London-based Middle East Eye that Khashoggi was "brutally tortured, killed and cut into pieces" inside the consulate.

Riyadh denied the reports that Khashoggi had been killed.
