Hundreds of Egyptian Christians have rallied at the funeral of two members of their community who were shot dead by a policeman in the southern province of Minya.

Videos of the funeral procession posted on social media show hundreds at the burial procession of two local Coptic Christians who were killed on Wednesday.

The angry mornours shouted "O God" and demanded authorities hold the policeman accountable for the killings and to provide more protection for Christians.

According to local police, a fight broke out between the policeman and Imad Kamal Sadeq, 49, and his 21-year-old son, David, at a construction site they were guarding.

The policeman has reportedly been taken into custody for questioning over the deadly incident.

Last month, the Islamic state group killed seven Christians in Minya in an attack on a bus carrying pilgrims on a desert road.

Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Egypt's population, have repeatedly come under attack from Islamic extremists. Copts have long complained of discrimination in Egypt.
