An Israeli tank fired into the besieged Gaza Strip on Saturday, following days of tensions on the border region.

Israel said the measure was taken after an "explosive device" was detonated close to a group of soldiers. Israel routinely launches artillery or air attacks on Gaza if it feels "provoked".

The tank fired towards an "observation post" in the south of Gaza after the "detonation of the explosive device adjacent to the security fence".

AFP reported that the attack happened close to the city of Khan Younis, although there were no casualties on either side.

Israeli soldiers fired at Palestinian protesters on Friday on the border, injuring a number of unarmed men during a demonstration.

Clashes also broke out Saturday during the funeral of a Palestinian youth whose body was held by Israel for ten days.

Earlier this month, Israel launched air strikes on Gaza following rocket fire from the strip.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for any rockets or attacks from the besieged territory.

Gaza is under a crippling siege by Israel and Egypt, denying Palestinians essential food, medical supplies and building materials.
