Two oil tankers have been reportedly damaged in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday morning, according to media reports.

A UK maritime safety group has warned of an "unspecified incident" in Gulf of Oman, urges "extreme caution" amid US-Iran tensions.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which is run by the British navy, put out the alert early on Thursday. It did not elaborate but said it was investigating.

The US Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The incident comes as Iranian media claimed - without offering any evidence - that there had been an explosion in the area targeting oil tankers.

Thursday's maritime alert comes after what the US has described as Iranian attacks on four oil tankers nearby, off the coast of the UAE. Iran has denied being involved.

The US Navy's 5th Fleet says it is "aware of the reported attack on tankers in the Gulf of Oman" and that it is assisting two oil tankers targeted in a "reported attack" in Gulf of Oman.

Sources told Reuters that two oil tankers were set alight after attacks in the Gulf of Oman.

Both tankers were evacuated immediately after the incident and the crew are safe, the sources said.
