Damascus explosion an 'assassination attempt' against pro-Assad mouthpiece: Syria regime

A bomb blast in Damascus on Thursday, which injured two civilians, was an attempted assassination against a well known pro-Assad commentator, Syrian regime media has reported on Thursday.

The explosion, on the al-Mezzeh highway in the Syrian capital, was allegedly targeting Taleb Ibrahim, whom the regime describe as a "political researcher and analyst".

He rose to prominence as a mouthpiece of the Assad regime, appearing on many Arab TV channels in 2011 and 2012.

Ibrahim's wife and son, who were also travelling in his car at the time, were injured in the alleged attack, pro-regime reporter Kinana Allouche posted on Facebook.

Ibrahim became a familiar face on various Arab TV channels for defending the actions of the regime forces, urging them to "eradicate" the rebels and come down on opposition areas with an "iron fist".

He also called for Assad to use nuclear weapons against Syrian civilians.

The analyst was ridiculed by anti-Assad supporters for his insistence that the Syrian opposition was a "Qatari, Saudi, French, American and Zionist conspiracy against Syria".
