More than fourteen people were killed and another 28 wounded in the crash after the driver lost control of the vehicle close to Turkey's border with Iran.

A van carrying migrants has crashed in eastern Turkey causing multiple fatalities, Turkey's state-run news agency said on Thursday.

Anadolu Agency said the van rolled into a roadside ditch on a highway near the town of Ozalp, close to Turkey's border with Iran, after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Fourteen people were killed and another 28 wounded in the crash, the private news agency DHA reported.

Women and children figured among the victims and their nationalities were not known. Police and ambulance services were rushed to the scene in Van province near the Iranian border.

Turkish media said the migrants had entered the country illegally.

Images in Turkish media showed the damaged minibus in a field with several rescue workers tending to the injured in Ozalp district.

Last month, a van carrying dozens of migrants ignored orders to stop and crashed into a wall in a town in northwest Turkey, near the country's border with Greece. Ten migrants were killed in that accident.

Most migrants try to enter European Union member Greece from Turkey by sea, making a relatively short crossing to nearby Greek islands. Others opt to cross via the longer northern land route.

Agencies contributed to this report.
