Ex-pornstar Mia Khalifa, who is of Lebanese origins, has denounced the pornography industry as "exploitative", saying it preys on vulnerable young women.

The now sports journalist made the comments in a lengthy sit-down interview published last week, addressing her short-lived but well-known porn career.

"[The industry] traps women legally into contracts when they're vulnerable," Khalifa said.

She revealed that she only made $12,000 during her three-month-long porn career despite her being one of the most popular performers.

Khalifa, who moved to the US as a child from her native Lebanon, said it has been hard to move on from her past and find work as a sports reporter.

She quit pornography after she acted in a scene in which she wore a hijab triggered death threats from the Islamic State group. Khalifa was born Catholic.
