Protests in Egypt tonight spread to Tora prison, according to the Egyptian Centre for Rights and Freedoms.

According to the network, prisoners knocked on doors and called for freedom from behind bars.

The prison holds many political prisoners, with Human Rights Watch describing the detainees living in dire conditions with bare cells without beds, and prisoners without soap.

On Friday evening, angry demonstrations erupted in the vicinity of Tahrir Square in the heart of the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Then, the contagion of protests spread from Tahrir Square to a number of governorates, and hundreds of demonstrations took place in major squares in Alexandria and Suez.

Video clips on social media showed that the chants were loudly demanding the overthrow of the regime and the departure of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

In scenes reminicent of the Egyptian revolution in 2011, protesters were filmed ripping down a banner displaying the image of the Egyptian President in Mansoura, before stamping on the poster.
