A mortar shell fired from Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula exploded in southern Israel on Saturday, Israeli media reported.

The errant shell is thought to have been fired during fighting between Egyptian security forces and militants in Sinai.

A synagogue and car were lightly damaged in the incident, with no casualties reported.

In February 2018, the Egyptian army launched a nationwide offensive against militants, focused mainly on North Sinai, where the Islamic State jihadist group has a significant presence.

The authorities say some 650 suspected jihadists and around 50 soldiers have been killed since.

Earlier on Friday an Islamic State militant attack killed seven soldiers and one civilian in North Sinai, security sources said.

IS-linked militants have carried out scores of attacks in Egypt mainly targeting the security forces and minority Christians.

In late 2017, North Sinai was the scene of the deadliest attack in Egypt's modern history when militants killed more than 300 worshippers at a mosque, without any group claiming responsibility.
