Broadcaster HBO have announced a joint US-Israeli production about the assassination of Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus in 2008.

Israeli film director Yuval Adler will direct the series, which is based on the book "Rise and Kill First", Deadline reported this weekend, which details the targeted killing of Mughniyeh, one of the Lebanese Islamist movement's leading figures.

Mughniyeh was killed aged 46 when explosives placed under his car in the Damascus suburbs were detonated by Mossad agents.

The first series of the HBO drama follows the joint CIA-Mossad operation behind the assassination of the Hezbollah commander, who had been accused of kidnappings and attacks on Israeli and Western military in Lebanon in the 1990s.

He was also accused of being behind the bombing of the Israeli embassy in Argentina in 1992 and a Jewish centre in the city two-years later.

The book looks into other Israeli targeted killings in the 1980s and 1990s.

Mughniyeh was a close ally of Iranian Quds' Force Qasem Soleimani, who was assassinated by the US early January.

Although Hezbollah have fought a number of wars and campaigns against in Israel, the movement is now more concerned with bolstering Bashar Al-Assad's regime.

Hezbollah has sent thousands of fighters from Lebanon to battle Syrian rebels.
