An exploding gas cylinder killed one person and injured two others in Beirut's Achrafieh district on Saturday, according to local media.

The blast, the cause of which has not yet been determined, occured in a building near Sassine Square.

Local reporters said the building was a shop and someone who had been inside the shop has been killed, just hours after the Lebanese capital was rocked by an explosion that killed four people and injured scores more.

The earlier blast was also caused by a fuel tank explosion, this time in a bakery in the Tariq al-Jadideh neighbourhood.

The blast, which damaged a large number of surrounding buildings, caused widespread panic among residents of the neighbouring areas, while crowds of injured people went to the Al-Makassad hospital for treatment.

The two explosions occured just two months after the devastating port blast on 4 August, which killed at least 190 people and caused billions of dollars worth of damage.

The string of explosions and fires in Beirut come as Lebanon struggles with its worst financial crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war and political strife, compounded by the coronavirus pandemic.
