Jordan sentences middle-aged rapist of 7-year-old schoolgirl to death
A man in his forties found guilty of tricking and raping a 7-year-old girl on her way home from school will be hung to death, Jordan's supreme court ruled.

A sexual predator who beat and raped a 7-year-old girl in Jordan two years ago was given the death penalty, after Jordan's highest court approved his execution, a report said on Tuesday.
The death penalty over the 2018 incident was proposed by Amman's Grand Criminal Court, before being approved by the Supreme Court.
The Amman court said the little girl was raped after school, when the man, who was found guilty, followed her home.
According to court files reveiwed by Jordanian media outlets, the girl was heading home from a school in Jordan's Irbid when she noticed she was being followed. The child did not suspect anything and approached the man asking for water, the reports said.
The predator "took advantage of her innocence" and took her to his home, where he violently hit, assaulted and raped her, according to the files.
The young victim reportedly pleaded and tried to dissuade her assaulter, who did not budge. She was threatened against speaking out before being released back to the streets, where she sat and cried next to a mosque, the court said.
A passerby noticed the girl's distress and took her home to her parents, where she recounted the horrors she endured.
Under Jordan's Penal code, a death sentence is mandatory for men found guilty of raping girls aged under 15.
"The issued sentence against the defendent is in line with legal requirements," the Court of Cessation – Jordan's supreme court – said in its decision.
Jordanians praised the decision on social media outlets, calling for an end to such henious crimes. Some claimed capital punishment can help deter rapists.

"Let's hope he isn't pardoned and his sentence isn't reduced to a few years of prison. It's really important for him to be executed in public, so everyone can see and no one dares repeat such a deed," one person said.
