US-based Saudi Arabian influencer and comedian, Abdulrahman Almutairi, was arrested by American law enforcement officers on Friday, according to a video circulating on social media.

The social media influencer – who has more than 200,000 followers on Instagram – streamed his arrest by the police live via his Instagram account.

Almutairi is an outspoken critic of the kingdom's rulers. The comedian has used his social media presence to condemn Saudi Crown Prince and de-facto leader Mohammad bin Salman, which he said has made him a target.

In January, Almutairi claimed in a video that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had "saved him from becoming the next Jamal Khashoggi."

The influencer alleged that when his father visited him in the US, he was accompanied on the flight by a suspected Saudi agent who attempted to bring him back to the kingdom against his will.

"If I go back to Saudi Arabia, I'll be killed in the airport," Almutairi told The Daily Beast at the time.

In the video, the officer arresting Almutairi says the police has received complaints from the influencer's "roommate" informing them of "crazy crimes" committed by the 27-year-old.

One of Almutairi's followers who shared the video said the arrest took place at the influencer's California residence.

No further details were immediately released on the arrest.
