Four men were arrested in Cairo on Tuesday after trying to rob a store disguised as Mohamed Salah - the Liverpool forward who is considered a sporting hero in his home country, Egypt.

The gang targeted a business on Hassanein Heikal Street in the capital's Nasr City neighbourhood, and tried to hide their identities by wearing Mo Salah masks.

According to the Youm7 news website, the men admitted to Major General Nabil Selim, the director of the General Department of Cairo Investigations, that they cut locks to gain access to shops but were soon apprehended by police.

Salah, 27, signed for Premier League club Liverpool FC in 2017 for a then club-record fee of £36.9 million.

The season he joined, Salah broke a Premier League scoring record, receiving the Premier League Golden Boot after netting 32 goals in 36 league games.

Last season, he helped the club lift the 2019 UEFA Champions League.

Salah is not only a record-breaking goalscorer, he is also one of the most high-profile Muslim players in the UK.
