Egyptian actor Amr Waked from hit US television Ramy said he and his son have recovered from Covid-19.

"Praise be to God, who cured my son of coronavirus. I will post a live video soon, talking about my infection with the virus and how our Lord has honoured me and cured me," Waked tweeted.

Waked also responded to one of his followers who asked how he recovered.

"I took the following: Paracetamol, Vitamin C, Thyme oil pills, Krill oil pills, four fresh garlic cloves on an empty stomach, Echinacea, a thyme drink with Lemon and Honey, and cinnamon with ginger and milk," he said.

He recommended eating healthy, specifically chicken soup with spices.

Waked lives in the United States, The New Arab's Arabic-language service reported.

In 2019, he was convincted in absentia by an Egyptian military court for "spreading false news and insulting state institutions" and sentenced to eight years in prison.

Waked said at the time that he had no knowledge of what the cases against him are about and that he cannot return to his home country.

He has said that the Egyptian authorities sent him threats. "They told me that if I return to Egypt, nothing good will happen to me," he tweeted.

Waked has long criticised President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and is opposed to proposed constitutional amendments, which could see him stay in office until 2034.

Egypt under Sisi has waged a massive crackdown on dissent in recent years, imprisoning thousands of people, rolling back freedoms won in the 2011 uprising and silencing
 dissenting voices.

Amr Waked is known internationally for his role in in the film Syriana.

He also starred as the father of main character Ramy Hassan on the Hulu series Ramy, the second season of which aired in 2020.
