A Qatar-based NGO is set to open the largest educational city for orphans in Sudan, according to local media.

The project, which has approached completion, will cater for the basic needs of 600 orphans in Omdurman, the most populated city in Khartoum state.

The city will welcome its initial cohort with the next six weeks, by which time it is expected Sudan will lift a coronavirus lockdown extended to the end of the month.

Mohammad Fadlullah, director general of Khartoum’s education ministry, said that a city which offered a complete educational service to orphans was a "welcome" addition that would "directly benefit" the community, Peninsula Qatar report.

Taiba Education city, built by international NGO Qatar Charity, includes both primary and secondary schools.

The development covers a vast area of 9000 square metres and is complete with IT suites and libraries, as well as sports facilities and full-time accommodation.

A state-of-the-art medical centre in the city will also serve residents of nearby villages, who have minimal access to essential services. Children from the villages will be able to attend the schools, it is reported.

Nearly 60,000 orphans live in the province of Khartoum alone, according to the social welfare ministry. Only half that number receive ongoing assistance from government actors and organisations.
