The US president's son told the Republic National Convention that his father had stopped 'never-ending wars' and achieved 'peace' in the Middle East region.
The son of President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday that the US leader had achieved "peace" in the Middle East and put an end to the country's "never-ending wars".

"My father rebuilt the mighty American military," Eric Trump told the Republic National Convention. "Peace in the Middle East. Never-ending wars were finally ended."

"Promises made, and promises, for the first time, were kept," the younger Trump told the audience. "America was no longer weak in the eye of the enemy".

The United States continues to have troops stationed in the Middle East, including in Iraq where American forces are involved in the continuing fight against the Islamic State group. Troops are also stationed in Syria and across the Gulf region.

Washington regularly implements drone strikes in Yemen against Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The US has also targeted extremist and Iran-linked militants in drone strikes in Iraq and Syria, such as in the January killing top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani, which resulted in retaliatory missile strikes and the downing of an airliner.

The first son was likely referring to the president's peace initiative for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict unveiled earlier this year.

In January, the Trump administration released its so-called "Peace to Prosperity" plan for the region in collaboration with right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The plan, widely rejected by Palestinian leaders and the general population, advocates for Israel's annexation of around a third of the occupied West Bank.

Earlier this month, Trump announced a US-brokered deal to normalise ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo termed the accord a "significant step forward for peace in the Middle East".

Pompeo has since embarked on a regional tour geared at pushing further Arab nations to make peace with Israel although none have yet accepted normalisation.
