Turkish police are investigating the "suspicious death" of a Russian-born American journalist in Istanbul, media reported on Tuesday.

Andre Vltchek, a 57-year-old journalist, was found dead in his car on Tuesday shortly after arriving in Istanbul, Daily Sabah reported.

After arriving at their Istanbul hotel from southern Turkey, Vitchek's wife attempted to wake up the investigative journalist but found him unresponsive.

An ambulance was called and later confirmed that Vitchek was dead, with police cordoning off the area in the Karaköy district of Istanbul and launching an investigation.

Vltchek's wife and two drivers are being questioned by police, the Turkish daily reported.

He was known to be a critic of US foreign policy and Israel, writing for left-wing news sites.
