Woman in Egypt arrested for impersonating doctor to kidnap baby from hospital

A woman was arrested near Egypt's capital on Monday after she was caught impersonating a doctor in an attempt to kidnap a baby from a hospital, according to local media reports.

The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, entered Abu Al-Rish Children's hospital in Giza on Monday pretending to be a member of staff.

She began examining the child of a woman, identified as Mona K, and asked her to leave the room to conduct further tests on the infant and to complete some documents.

She returned only to realise that the woman and her three-month-old child had disappeared, leading to a police investigation.

A security source in the Cairo Security Directorate said the forensic investigation team was able to determine the route of the woman, using her description provided by the child's mother.

After the suspect left the hospital, she took a number of taxis to hide traces of her route until she was able to take public transport once she had reached the Mohamed Naguib train station.

The security source added that the police formed a forensic investigation team to examine all surveillance cameras inside and outside the hospital.

The child was later found with the woman and returned to their family.
