Moroccan police blocks nurses' march calling for employment rights

Moroccan police blocked a march on Saturday organised by nurses demanding a change in the national legislation that affects their ability to get promoted, Anadolu Agency reported.

The march was spearheaded by the country’s National Nurses Coordination, which called for the protesters to meet in front of Rabat’s parliamentary building at 10 a.m. before heading to the ministry of health.

Police blocked the demonstrators when the protesters reached the city’s Bab-el Had square, the news agency reported.

The group of nurses want the law to be amended to remove the legislation that stops two-year degree holders to obtain promotions, according to the group’s statement.

The march had already been flagged as a problem by Rabat’s officials due to the Morocco’s coronavirus restrictions.

This comes after contractual teachers protested for numerous days across the city last week, calling for a full integration of their employment within Morocco’s public sector.
