A "fake doctor" has been arrested in Egypt for allegedly practising gynaecology for ten years without any medical qualification, local media reported on Friday.
The man, identified as Salah Abdo, 39, had allegedly been treating women using forged diplomas which said that he had graduated with a medical degree from an Egyptian university.
He managed to attract scores of female patients to his clinic in the Al-Shubak area of the northeastern province of Al-Sharqia, by offering cheap rates, the Arabic news website Arabi21 reported.
He was exposed "by chance" when a ministry of health official passed by the clinic and discovered that he did not have enough identity documents, Arabi 21 said.
It was unclear whether he carried out any female genital mutilation (FGM) - a practice that remains common in rural Egypt, despite a ban.
The university which the man claimed to have graduated from denied he ever studied there.
There are no accurate statistics on the number of fake medical diplomas that are discovered every year in Egypt.
However, Egypt's poorest often fall victim to such scams because they are unable to afford healthcare.
