Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has been named as the new captain of Egypt's national football team, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Monday.
In a statement on Facebook, the EFA said head coach Hossam El-Badry's decision to name Salah as captain was supported by the team's senior players.
El-Badry described the move as "vital to introduce more stability" to the squad while Egypt is focusing on 2022 World Cup qualification games in the coming months.
Salah, 28, is one of Liverpool's top players, having won the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup with the English club.
The Nagrig-born forward scored the opening goal of Liverpool's triumphant Champion's League final clash against Tottenham in 2019, and was central to Liverpool's 2020 Premier League success.
With the league win, Salah became the second-ever Arab national player to win the English top division.
On the international stage, Salah helped Egypt qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, which was the Pharaohs' first appearance in the top tournament since 1990.
