Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man and inured his wife on Tuesday after shooting at their car near the village of Beir Nabala in occupied East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian health ministry said in a statement that two citizens were shot in the head.

Osama Mansour, 42, was in a critical condition when he arrived at a hospital in Ramallah where he later died from his wounds.

The statement added that his wife was shot in the back and is in a stable condition.

Shortly after the statement was released, Mansour was pronounced dead.

According to Palestinian Authority's news agency, Wafa, witnesses said they saw Israeli soliders throwing a stun grenade under Mansour's car at a checkpoint at around 3:30am local time.

This led Mansour to speed away before soldiers opened fire on the car killing the man and injuring his wife.

The Israeli army admitted in a statement that it opened fire at a car after it stopped at a flying checkpoint set up in Beir Nabala and then continued on the road.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, committing various crimes against Palestinian civilians, human rights groups say.

More than 600,000 Israeli Jews live in settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, in constructions considered illegal under international law.

Israeli forces and settlers are known to harass civilians, demolish Palestinian homes, poison livestock, vandalise property and other forms of violence, according to rights groups.
