Funerals were held in Gaza on Sunday after at least 17 members of an extended Palestinian family were killed after their homes were levelled to the ground by an Israeli airstrike on al-Rimal neighbourhood.

Among the dead were three-year-old toddler Adam Izzat al-Kolak and one-year-old baby Qusai Samih al-Kolak, as six other members of the family remain missing under the rubble.

The number of the dead from the attack climbed to 40 by the afternoon, marking the worst reported daily death toll yet in the almost week-long attacks.

Dozens of mourners carried the bodies of members of the al-Kolak family through the streets of Gaza City.

Gaza's health ministry said 12 women and eight children were among those killed by Sunday's strikes, with another 50 people wounded.

Rescuers raced to pull survivors and bodies from the rubble.

Among the dead was Palestinian doctor Ayman Abu Auf, who served as director of internal medicine at Gaza's al-Shifa Hospital

A number of medics held an impromptu funeral near the hospital on Sunday morning, reciting Quranic verses over his body.

Another doctor, Moueen al-Aloul, one of the besieged  enclave's few neurologists, was also reportedly killed in the strike.

At least 202 Palestinians have been killed since the violence erupted on Monday, and 5,588 others injured, the Gaza health ministry reported on Sunday.

In the Gaza Strip, 181 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes, including 52 children and 31 women.

In the West Bank, 21 Palestinian protesters were shot dead with live ammunition by Israeli occupation forces that violently crashed protests, which broke out in demonstration of the aggression on Gaza.

In the Gaza Strip, 1,225 Palestinians have been wounded by the Israeli airstrikes and artillery bombing, while in the West Bank, 4,363 Palestinians have been wounded by Israeli occupation forces or illegal Jewish settlers.
