The New Arab's Arabic-language service, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed,  was the target of a series of cyberattacks on Wednesday, amid similar attempts to hack news sites.

The attacks lasted several hours and peaked at around 11am Qatar time (9am GMT), Ayman Qaddoura, IT Manager at the Fadaat Media Group, the holding company of Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, said in a statement.

Qaddoura said around 17 million requests from a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Services) attack aimed at disabling the website's functions were monitored.

Fadaat Media said it is monitoring its systems and raising security protections following the attempts.

It comes just days after Doha-based news network, Al Jazeera, reported a series of cyberattacks on its platforms.

In a statement on Wednesday, Al Jazeera said that "continued electronic attacks aimed at accessing, disrupting and controlling some of the news platforms" between Saturday and Tuesday.
