An anarchist group attacked the Iranian embassy in Athens early on Monday, smashing windows and throwing red paint into the courtyard in protest at Tehran's treatment of its Kurdish population, police said.

"The attack was claimed by the Rubicon group," a police official told AFP, adding that no arrests had yet been made.

The attack was carried out by about 10 members of the group at about 0300 GMT who, armed with iron bars, took the guard by surprise and then smashed windows in the waiting room.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, police said.

The Rubicon group, which has carried out a series of similar attacks in recent years, claimed in an online statement that the attack as a gesture of solidarity with the "Kurds of Iran".

The Iranian embassy in Paris also saw a similar attack by protesters on Friday.

Alleged Kurdish activists threw objects and smashed windows, according to Reuters.

A French police spokeswoman said officers were called after the trouble started outside the building.

The officers searched 12 people but did not make any arrests because the embassy refused to file a complaint.

Last week, Iranian forces fired seven missiles at the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) in northern Iraq, killing 11 people.

PDKI is an armed opposition group who demand greater autonomy for the Kurdish community in Iran.
