A number of Arab foreign ministers visited Russia on Monday to discuss the latest developments in Ukraine and the impact of its invasion on Arab countries as the war approaches its sixth week.

The delegation included Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Algeria, Iraq and Sudan.

The ministers were scheduled to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Monday before travelling to Warsaw on Tuesday for talks with their Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba.

An Algerian foreign ministry statement said the ministers will listen to the views and concerns of the warring sides, and see if Arab states can contribute to efforts to reach a political solution to the war.

Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine has led food and fuel prices to soar globally, worsening an already difficult crisis being faced by many Arab countries.

Russia and Ukraine, with vast grain-growing regions that are among the world's main breadbaskets, account for a huge share of the globe's exports in several major commodities such as wheat, vegetable oil and corn.

Many countries in the Middle East and North Africa already banned the exports of many food products to cope with the decrease in supply stemming from the war.
