US superstar Britney Spears, 39, is now engaged to her Iranian-born long-term boyfriend, Sam Asghari, 27, just days after her father filed to end a conservatorship that controlled her life.

The "Oops! I Did It Again" singer on Sunday announced her engagement to her boyfriend Sam Asghari on an Instagram post displaying her diamond ring engraved with the word "lioness".

"I can’t f****** believe it!" she wrote to the caption of her video post in which she winks and kisses a smiling Asghari.

She exclaims “yes!” to her fiance when he asks if she likes her ring.

Asghari, an American-Iranian actor and personal trainer, posted his own photo of Britney showing off her ring.

The engagement comes days after her father filed to end the court conservatorship that has controlled the singer's life and money for 13 years.

Asghari has publicly supported her throughout her legal battle to end her conservatorship, with Spears telling a judge in June that she wanted to marry and have a baby with him - something she was not allowed to do before.

Britney's father, Jamie Spears been the court-appointed decision-maker of her life, with capacious control over her finances and private life under the pretext of her spiralling mental health in the late 2000s.

The conservatorship controlled all aspects of her life, including minute personal decisions such as preventing her from getting her nails done, changing the colour of her kitchen, and was even forced to have an IUD, preventing her from having a baby.

For years, impassioned fans called for her freedom in a movement dubbed #FreeBritney. The hashtag gained massive traction last year.

Over the summer, she released a documentary highlighting her life under the conservatorship, which she branded as "abusive".

On Tuesday, Jamie suddenly filed to end the conservatorship, despite fighting vehemently to stay in control of his daughter's life.

The filing at a court in Los Angeles states: "Ms Spears has told this Court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship.

“She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where and how often to get therapy. She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight.

"She wants to be able to get married and have a baby, if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding."
