Clashes broke out between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Wednesday morning.

Palestinian gunmen allegedly targeted Israeli soldiers as they conducted raids in the area, local media reported.

Israeli forces confiscated cameras and fired tear gas.

The clashes took place along Jenin's Nazareth Street, which leads to the Jalameh checkpoint, after Israel conducted a wave of arrests in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Between 1 and 11 April 2002, the Israeli army launched a deadly siege and assault on the Jenin refugee camp, an event many in the city have not forgotten.

During its globally condemned Operation Defensive Shield, Israel sent soldiers into six major cities in the occupied West Bank.

The UN concluded that the Israeli army killed dozens of Palestinians in the tiny camp, which is only 0.4 square kilometres and hosts around 15,000 people.

Israel refused to allow members of a UN commission of inquiry, mandated by the Security Council, from conducting a full investigation. A subsequent report on the massacre compiled by the secretary-general concluded that at least 52 Palestinians were killed in the attack on the Jenin refugee camp.

Israel has occupied the West Bank illegally since 1967, committing various crimes against Palestinian civilians, monitors say.

More than 600,000 Israeli Jews live in settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, in constructions considered illegal under international law.
