A Minnesota mosque was subject to a hate crime this weekend, after anti-Muslim, racist messages were sprayed on its walls.

The phrases "death of Islam", "f*** Islam", with a Nazi swastika were painted on and around the Moorhead-Fargo Islamic Community Centre in Moorhead, US.

A mosque window was also broken and police have released a photo of the suspect with the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Minnesota is home to the Democrat representative for the state, Somali-American Ilhan Omar, who herself has been the target of hate speech.

"My heart is with the Moorhead/Fargo Muslim community at this time. This is a routine reality for many Muslims in this country. Inshallah the culprit will be found," she tweeted.

The hate crime, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIRS) are calling on the US to update existing legislation to make it easier to report hate crimes.

"We call on local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate this disturbing attack as a hate crime and to devote all resources necessary to bring the perpetrators to justice," said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein.

"Our state's lawmakers must also show that they take growing hate crimes seriously by passing legislation to update how hate incidents are reported and handled."

The rights group is urging the Minnesota House committee to allow community organisations to report hate crimes to the Department of Human Rights, update the police training to respond to hate crimes, and treat hateful graffiti as a hate crime.
