At least 60 people are believed to have been killed in a crane collapse that damaged the Grand Mosque in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca.

Another 30 worshippers were injured, according to the country's Civil Defence Authority, late on Friday.

Social media images shared online appear to show part of a huge crane that had fallen through the roof of the mosque. It is thought to have been brought down by a huge storm currently buffeting Mecca.

Saudi Arabia is preparing for the Hajj pilgrimage season, during which hundreds of thousands of Muslims are expected to journey to the city this month.
