Egypt will begin local production of China's Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine from mid-June, Health Minister Hala Zayed told MBC Masr TV on Sunday evening.

Zayed's remarks came ahead of a delivery of 500,000 doses of the Chinese-produced vaccine to Egypt on Monday, according to airport sources cited by Reuters.

Cairo received raw materials to produce up to two million Sinovac doses in May, following an agreement to produce and distribute the vaccine to other African states.

Production will begin on 15 June, however a checking period of six weeks will be undertaken before the doses can be distributed, Zayed said.

She added that Egypt will receive materials to produce a further 4.2 million doses.

Egypt aims to produce a total of 40 million Sinovac doses this year, Zayed said.

She added that Cairo expects to finalise an agreement with an international firm to produce a European vaccine in Egypt.

This follows remarks last month by Zayed and other cabinet members, confirming that Egypt is seeking to produce the AstraZeneca vaccine locally.
