The crew of a Lebanese cargo ship was rescued in Egypt over the weekend after their vessel capsized off the coast of Alexandria.

Egyptian naval forces rescued the 10-man crew, who included nine Syrians and one Indian. They received aid upon reaching shore.

Alexandria’s port authority received a stress signal from the cargo ship Ayla on Saturday, prompting the Al-Arish rescue vessel to head out to sea.

The rescue team found the ship, 98-metres in length, almost completely submerged when they arrived. It sunk after being tipped over by strong winds and uneven currents.

It had been carrying scrap metal, according to local media.

No further information regarding financial losses or other damages was clear.

Egypt announced that some ports would be closed due to bad weather, as temperatures were still low on Monday.
